I have a RFQ from a power station for Crane Test Weight 240-260 tons . This weight will be used to calibrate the lifting capacity of new crane purchased from China. The power station does not want to risk lifting the generator before having it calibrated. As it is one time use they want to keep costs at the lowest.

My foundry does not have the capacity to produce a single piece casting of 250 tons.I intend producing 16 numbers of 15 tons casting each. The sub weights of 15 tons will be integrated in a self locking manner for easy assembly and interchangeability.( Please see a representative picture).

Yes, for design and fabrication of structure ,services of a Certified Engineer along with TPA approval is being done.

Seek any advice or comments about any pitfalls in the proposal to handle this project.

Easy take a trip to the manufacture of the crane and watch them test it before you get it. Or if they or the distributor has already installed it
then have them proof test it before you hand them the $. Its on them to test it. Let them figure out what to use for the weight.
And lesson learned don't pay full price for any installed machine until its installed and proven.

To build on the idea of containers + water bags: Flexi-bags or flexi-tanks ( can be used to fill a container with water, overcoming the waterproofing issue. The bags that I've seen for liquid food products are supplied with an integrated head board that is placed in the container door frame and is equiped with nozzle and valve.

I haven't read the undoubtedly informative replies but have you considered the advantage of a pulley system ?

Thanks all for your interest in the thread. An update, the power plant ( read customer) has accepted my technical proposal to cast 16 numbers of 15 ton casting each and supply. They would do the rest of fabrication and other onsite activities.

After annual shutdown maintenance,, the foundry shall be busy producing these ballast weights.

Once again appreciate your interest and efforts. ET is a great place to exchange ideas.

Keep us abreast of the results with pictures and a slight summary,if you do not mind. And watch out for that load radius at 240 tons which is a lots of weight.
