Does anybody know of a requirement to fit load computers on crane. I have heard that all cranes with a swl greater than 3 tonne need one but I cannot find it writtern anywhere. I have tried HSE, ISO, IMCA
I don't know of a code that requires a load computer, although as a general safe practice some sort of load indicator or load cell should be used. There are portable units that can be used, they don't have to be permanently mounted.
It seems the general line is for drilling rig cranes they are required and for other cranes they are recommended. It will depend on the lift and the circumstances, but in general I would certainly require them, most companies I work for have the same requirement. It doesn't make much sense not to use a load indicator.
I have not scoured through them in some time, but the governing codes for offshore cranes is API RP 2D, onshore cranes are covered under U.S. CFR 29CFR1910. If it is a new offshore crane, it should be designed and installed in to API 2C.
