Is cosmos works accurate? if used by a novice? i was wondering if its as simple as it seems to be, apply restraint and load and presto. Is there many things missing in the evaluation of a part?? Also is there thermal and other evaluations available that i cant see, or is there a seperate full version available.

There are 3 different packages of Cosmos Works. In SW you only get a taste of Cosmos.

Cosmos better be accurate. There are a ton of companies using it for just this type of practice. Cosmos can account for ever type of varaible but it will give a good under standing of what will happen.

Read the site for more information.

Any FEA is performed based on assumptions. The more assumptions, the errors possible. The "trick" is to understand the assumptions being made and their possible impact on the resulting analysis. This is true of any FEA program.

As for CosmosWorks specifically...it does a reasonable job and is as accurate as the underlying geometry and assumptions. I as suspicious of the default mesh sizes and like to vary the mesh size to see convergance, and to identify areas that really need custom meshing. So, while C/Works is easy to use, don't sign-off on the first set of numbers it spits out. Verify, verify, and verify again.

Becareful though, as it will only give the appropriate "answers" to the "questions" being asked, and if the questions are not correctly formed, then your answers will be bogus.

The assumptions and questions are everything. This alone makes FEA a treacherous area unless you know what you are doing. If you are doing simple loads and stresses on parts and the geometry is not as simple as the examples in the strength of materials books AND if you are only looking to ballpark the answer, then by all means use FEA. Cosmos is a fine package. Its accuracy isn't really the question. The question is probably more like "How critical is this analysis? Am I knowledgeable enough to properly set it up?"

Good luck,

All of these posts are sage advice and you would be wise to heed them all!! I have been openly critical of the inclusion of Cosmos Express in the last several releases of SolidWorks. I won't bore everyone with my reasons again, but suffice it to say I have witnessed good "rule of thumb" engineers not understand the assumptions, ask the wrong questions and be mesmerized by the colored dithered display and abandon reason with disastrous results. Be careful!! This is not for the novice (in my humble opinion). As stated above this is for all FEA codes, not only Cosmos.
