Over 46' dia., this 1964 AST has a badly corroded shell section and projecting bottom, about 3' long right under the first three steps of the circular stairs. A pin hole leak developed following a sandblasting job about 1" from the projecting bottom plate. Remaining tank exterior at the shell to bottom joint looks remarkably intact from years of weather exposure.

Patching the shell is not feasable as there is not enough steel to weld on the bottom projection.

An option to repair would be to have a new bottom on top of old one but very expensive.

Will API allow cutting out and butt weld (full penetration) a square shape bottom plate to restore the projection? At that point we would either cut out and (full penetration) weld the corroded shell section.

Any suggestion is appreciated.

You can replace a bottom plate and also a portion of shell plate. There are minimum plate dimensions and weld clearances. See API 653 for guidance, or contact an expert.

Please tell me the thickness of flanges with DN600 pipe in API 650?
