Cooling Tower Water Branch Piping Tie IN

I have a cooling tower water circuit and need to tie in some branch lines. Is there a recommended tie in i.e., off top of main or bottom. Which is the recommended practice and is there a reference source I can use to confirm location?

Moondoggy,
If the equipment a new branch is going to feed is in a structure higher than the header then take the branch off the top.
If the equipment a branch is going to feed is lower than the header then take the branch off the bottom of the header.
Just keep it simple.

In most cases due to gravity effects the cooling water coming off the topside of header tends to have less suspended solids than when you come off bottom. If you have to come off the bottom I would recommend adding a Y strainer for periodic blowdown. Keep in mind that unless you have good PM mechanics running around, in the real world, periodic blowdown almost never gets done.

Make your welders happy - design connections off the top side (half) of piping!
