hello
what is the best way to calculate and selection the
cooling tower in my application ?

thanks

In your situation, I would just ask Marley or some other supplier.

Some suppliers have software that they may be prepared to give you that would make such selections.

Calculations for towers invlove a number of parameters, including entering or hot water temperature, leaving or cold water temperature, ambient wet bulb temperature, and approach to name a few. Once you have these nailed down you can use them to select a tower. Selection may invlove some iteration to find the optimal solution of life cycle cost for the given parameters. Companies like Baltimore aircoil have software on their website available as a free download. As athomas mentioned, it is good to work with a supplier for the selection process. A good description of tower selection can be found at

Talk to one or more cooling tower suppliers. Each one would obviously (with due respects to them) try to sell their product which may or may not be the BEST solution. So, it's better to talk to more than one supplier, give them your requirement, get their recommendations, study them and arrive at a solution.

For selection of cooling towers (to select which tower from a particular manufacturer will give the capacity required for an specific application) you can use a selection program from the manufacturer, or just select the tower using their techincal brochure and the tables you will found there. However if what you need is to calculate a cooling tower, then you can use a set of software programs published by Mr. Marcel R. Lefevre called MRL, you will need several programs depending on what you need to calculate, for example the IDXF program will calculate a cross flow tower, the PC program will plot the performance of the tower, the KHAL will calculate the tower's capability, etc. You can contact Mr. Marcel R. Lefevre at mr_cooling_tower@compuserve.com Mr. Lefevre is an old mechanical engineer with many years of experience in thermodynamics and cooling tower design, the programs where writen long time ago and they work in DOS environment, but they are the only ones that are not private use of the engineering department of a cooling tower manufacturer. in fact many manufacturers utilize Mr. Lefevre programs to calculate large field erected towers. Hope this will help
