Conversion from .ai to .dxf

Does anyone know of a way to convert Adobe Illustrator .ai files to .dxf without creating many small line segments? I can convert the files easily enough but then the cycle time is slow because of all these silly short lines! Thanks.

How do you currently convert .AI files to DXF?

I'm looking for a standalone program that can convert both MAC and PC versions of AI files to DXF. I will be importing them into another conversion program that will take care of "curve fitting" so it can generate machine tool code" files for cutting on a laser or plasma.

I think this program can also generate dxf's after curve fitting but I'm not sure. The source is Merry Mechanization inc.

This program is pretty spendy about $4000 I think.

I've also found a pretty reasonbly priced ($90) plug-in for ADOBE Ilustrator that says it will do the curve fitting called EXDXFpro. This plug in however is not standalone, as it's used with Illustrator.

I believe that the HIJAAK program suppliers say it can do the curve fitting but I've never tried it.
