I had a meeting today where a specification specialist was telling me the numbering system for specs has changed a few years ago. (I must have missed that memo)

Anyway he was saying many of the site specs now have different numbers assigned to them. I looked at the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) webpage and sure enough, seems things have been renumbered.

For example, division 2 is now 'existing conditions'.
Division 3 remains 'Concrete'
Division 31 is earthwork
Division 33 is utilities.

Had any of you heard about this? Is this being done in your area?

yes, it was changed a few years ago, but not everybody paid attention. I have seen numerous recent specs which still utilize the old system. I guess the thought that was that changing to a new numbering system would be too much of a pain in the rear and could create problems with cross referencing. The old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind.

It is more that just renumbering. The complete specification context was also reformatted.

Nobody seems to be clamoring for the new system. I did a large project last year with the old numbers and no contractor bothered to say anything about it.

Most standard specification packages were / are being issued in both Master Format 1995 and 2004. I think you'll find that the new format's divisions allow for more specific specifications. I'm pretty sure that network cabling was previously squeezed into Division 15 and now has it own Division 27. I think you'll find that some agencies haven't yet updated to the new format, but it is upon us.
