This is a very simple problem, or at least it was to me at first, but my colleagues have confused me & I'd like some unbiased input. I need to calculate the separating force generated by the hydraulic pressure parting a BSP (parallel) screwed connection that's sealed with a dowty washer, naturally the screwed connection both have through bores. The sealing diameter is larger than the major diameter of the thread and in use fluid flows around the threads and is restrained by the dowty washer. I'm only interested in the forces with the system static i.e. zero flow.
Is it as simple as: Force = Pressure x Area under the dowty seal.
My colleagues have said: Force = Pressure x (Area under the dowty minus area of the through bore)
