We have a HSS 8x8x5/8 that has to have vertical 2x6s attached to it on two sides so that plywood panels can be connected to the 2x6s. Initially I thought of putting shop welded studs along the two faces so that 2x6 can be attached via these studs but I think its an impractical approach as the nut on the stud would have to be countersunk within the 2x6.

A 5/8" thickness seems too thick to get tek screw through plus I am afraid that the tek screw may shoot right through the wood.

Any other ideas I should be considering?

I would use the welded studs, small diameter such as 3/8" or 1/2" and use double 2x on the outside of the tube - one to connect to the tube, and one to cover the bolt heads.

If you can't get the second 2x due to limitations in your geometry, then I'd use self tapping screws with pre-drilled starter holes through the tube walls.

How about powder actuated fasteners? Something like a Hilti X-U?

Weld 12" long 1/4" steel angles at whatever spacing you need to the HSS with two holes in them for 1.5" long lag screws.

As EOR's we should take the responsibility to design our structures to support the components we allow in our design per that industry standards.

How about a hollo-bolt? You can locate them as needed in the field.

I met with them last week and have attached their latest catalog info. The company is UK based, and is represented in North America by Steelwork Connections.
I have used the products twice for structural steel work. They are presently working on their ASTM standards. AISC recognizes them in the 13th Edition. But, without the ASTM Standard they are not defined in RCSC spec and AISC spec. Capacities and properties are specified manufacturer.

Are these plywood insulated panels - styrofoam core?

If so, then the 2X6's are just a nailer for the plywood overlap of the panel.

I just use Nelson sill plate anchors - threaded welded studs as you mentioned - and provide drilled holes in the panel to accept the bolt heads. If you set in the bolt head on a 2X6, there will be less than an inch for the anchor to bear on. Use it all the time.

Is HSS 8x8x5/8 a standard size in your locale? It's not standard in Canada. Maybe HSS 10x10x1/2 would be an option.

Hilti has all the product specs on their website, and if their tech support is great. Nailing 2"x_ plates to steel is done all the time. 5/8" is pretty thick, but not all of the products need to penetrate all the way thru.

If you like the idea of threaded studs, you can get threaded studs from Nelson stud. It will not have any head. You can weld threaded rods onto the steel also, but a stud welder is about 10times faster and it is a full strength connection whereas a fillet is not unless you spec that. The carpenters will prefer installing with hilti nails, since it can be time consuming to locate and drill wood plates for imperfect threaded studs.

I've used the HolloBolts. They work Great, by my how expense they are.

by my how expense they are? Is that really Toad talking?

Spec'ing the hollo bolt sounds like creating yourself an RFI asking to change to something the trades can get. I detest RFI's. I have tried many times to use Piekko components or other neat precast components I have found in Europe, and it never works when they find out it takes 8wks or more to get the parts.
