Hi,

I'm designing a concrete through girder railway bridge (due to clearance constraint, I have to place the deck at the bottom flange) and I am not sure if I have to allow for U-Frame action on the deck and the deck connection to the girder?

Anyone aware of papers or discussion on this topic??? U-frame action in steel through girder are well documented and specified in design standards however, I cannot find any for concrete.
Appreciate any relevant response.
Cheers

It sounds like a JMI channel bridge (it was a patented system), which is essentially a u-frame.

See if you can get a copy of "The Segmental Concrete Channel Bridge System" prepared by Civil Engineering Research Foundation, Report No. HITEC 96-01.

JMI was a spin-off of Figg & Mueller. The US operation designed a few of these bridges in the early-mid 90's; haven't heard of any one building one since. When the US operation was sold in '98 their European parent kept the patent.

Sesign of Modern Highway Bridges
Nerendra Taly
McGraw Hill 1998

addresses generically these bridges in section 5.2.6 Trapezoidal box and U-beam bridges, p. 515 to 523

Not a very normative outlook and mostly roadbridge, but quotes a number of references.

Theory and Design of Bridges
Petros P. Xanthakos
McGraw Hill 1994

addresses RC THROUGH GIRDER BRIDGES at section 3-7, p. 198 to 202, also roadbridge outlook, considers Girder-Slab Interaction and so implicitly recommends to consider frame action, even if in simple way; a more hands-on article.

Except that you be ample on stiffness, considering frame action for a railway bridge can't be but benefitial, since moder codes are quite stringent in specs for controlled deformation.

Hi Ishvaaag,

Thank you for the response. I cannot source the book in our office library soon enough but I wonder if you have a it? If it's not too much of an imposition, would you mind flicking me a copy of the relevant pages.

Appreciate your help.

Cheers

Yes I have both home in paper, I will try the scan later ..., not cozy because both thick tomes.

Thank a million for this!!! You're a prince among engineers.
