We have a distribution Transformer of 2.8 X 1.5m, we will replace it with a new transformer whose base will need to be 3.3 x3 m. we intend to use the existing pad. is it ok to just put some dowel in it and just extend the existing pad?
It could be, just proceed according to analysis. If your analysis shows you can get reinforcement enough that way for a proper structural behavio
r, it may be a reasonable way to proceed that forfeits demolition works.
Theoretically, it could work but is it worth the trouble? The labor required to drill holes and the epoxy needed to anchor the new steel is probably worth more than the concrete saved. Demolish the existing pad and build a new pad to the required size.
What is the foundation under the pad, and how thick is it? If the foundation is mass concrete, it should be no problem to just extend the pad. And if the pad is thin (less that 100mm or so), you probably don't need dowels.
Depending on how much of the footing you need to develop to resist overturning, not just bearing, you probably will need the dowels. However, I would STRONGLY recommend to rip and replace here.
The OP didn't say whether the pad is a footing or a pad on top of an existing concrete floor. We extend equipment pads on top of concrete floors all the time. We just roughen the receiving surfaces and pour the extension. Whether we dowel or reinforce the extension depends on the thickness. If it is a footing - I agree - it should be repoured.
