Hello,

I need to make a baseplate for a machine, but my customer is requesting me complete penetration joints as part of the requirments.

my concer is the plate thikness (32mm), I am not sure if it is allowable to do such a job on this kind of material.

in other hand I have a perpendicular union (T) and I do not know how to prepare the material.

200782,
There is pressure equipment made of 200 mm and thicker plate, welded full penetration as per the code requirements. 32 mm plate is not categorized as special material;- it however, depends on the material (I only assume that you are using carbon steel material). It is also true that welding full pen 32 mm plate requires considerable effort/costs and no additional gain, compared with a partial penetration, if no corrosion problems are present. Also, if the T union seems to be in the other hand, perhaps you could change hands. As for plate's welding preparation, you could make a double V (V on both sides) and weld slowly, low heat input in the root weld, then blast it with FCAW.

Unless there are access problems for the welder, there is no reason you cannot have them fabricate a full pen weld. The shop will just have to bevel one plate edge and then perform a multi-pass weld. There are also double bevel details for full pen welding if they wish. If your client knows enough to want a full pen weld, ask them if they want it to be ultrasonically tested as well. Good Luck.
