Compatibilty of older MS programs with Window 7

I have been checking with Staples about buying Window 7. My question to them was the compatibility issue of older MS Wordpad and Excel programs which came with my XP Professional almost 10 years ago. The clerk said these MS programs would not work and that I would need to purchase the new ones.
Is that true?

I wouldn't take the clerks word on it.

I've been running Microsoft Word and Excel 2007 on Windows 7 for about a year now with no problems. I would think older versions would be compatible, especially if run in XP Compatibility Mode. I doubt the compatibility mode would even be necessary.

??? Windows 7 has Wordpad and Notepad built-in, so there's no need to migrate them.

Office 2000 appears to work fine on the W7 Release Candidate, haven't tried on actual W7 yet, but I wouldn't expect any issues. The only thing that is croaking on W7 is the Office Shortcut Bar.

If I remember correctly, XP compatibility mode is not available in all versions of windows 7. I think it is in the 'professional' version (or higher), but not in the 'home premiere' version (or lower).

Office 2000 is working fine here on my Windows 7 x64 PC.

A bunch of other older programs also running fine.

Acrobat 6 will not run on x64; I'm running it in virtual XP mode (need Win 7 Pro for the virtual XP mode, which must be downloaded from MS).

The clerk is clueless.

Caution: Even if you purchase Windows 7 Pro (or higher), to use the Virtual XP mode your micro processor needs to be virtualization capable. Download and run the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool from the attached link to find out if your PC can run in Virtual XP mode.
