compatibility with Win98SE

While SW may run on Win98SE it's no longer supported by SW or MSoft. If it runs it will most likely suffer greatly.
I would upgrade to either WinXP Pro or Win2k Pro. Those are the recommended OS's for SW's.
Until my job switch a month+ ago...I was running SW's on a Win 2k box.

NT no longer works properly (on this ancient machine) using PhotoWorks with 2003 or above.
2000 Pro is excellent--very stable on my other ancient machine of only 666 Mhz P3
XP Home so far is OK
XP Pro seems to work well for others, although I've not yet tested that myself.

What version of SW are you using? I am using SW 2001 with WIN XP Pro. It can be a bit unstable sometimes, but other times it's rock solid (moody OS?). Overall I prefer WIN XP over WIN 2000, due to it's multimedia capabilities. If you are running a newer version of SW go with XP Pro, otherwise go with 2000 Pro.
No matter what version of SW your using Win98SE is a bad Memory Manager and can cause SW to crash a lot more often.

Memory and zoom capacity is seriously limited in 98SE--also, 98SE will soon lose support from Microsoft and has stability issues when challenged with high memory applications.

Really, I'm not unsympathetic. Unfortunately, in order to keep up with performance demands and enhancements, any software of this complexity has to keep migrating to the latest hardware and OS platforms. You regulars know I keep saying this. Once you get into this kind of software you are on a constant upgrade path - like it or not. So you have to budget for it. The initial purchase becomes less significant. It can be unfortunate and disappointing so some, but it really is a case of "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen". So often I hear the complaint that "I need... but it's too expensive." If that is the case, I'm afraid you need to take a brutal look at your business and realize you are trying to compete out of you league or seriously underfunded. However in student and/or home use situations it really is tough.

I played around with SW Personal Edition with a 98SE system. The comment above about 98SE with SW being crash prone was certainly true for me. Had to reboot about twice an hour. Not very productive. It may have had something to do with the slow processor or low RAM but if you are using 98SE then chances are you have a slow processor with low RAM.
If you look at the link above that I posted it explains that in SW03
(3) Not recommended for production use.
(4) Windows 98 SE (Second Edition) is the only version of Windows 98 that is supported
This tells me that SW is not a good tool to use on Win98SE
SW04 isn't supported by Win98SE
This is true for PE versions too.
