An older Bar wants to add an addition to the bar that also will be used as a bar. The existing Bar is about 1,200 SF. How many square feet can be added to this bar before a fire sprinkler system is required?

Depends where you are and what the in-force building codes require.

Okay, I found it...
IBC, 303.1, Group A, A-2, Bars.

IBC 903.2.1.2 Group A-2 [F] fire sprinklers are required if...
The fire area exceeds 5,000 SF,
The fire area has an occupant load of 100 or more,
The fire area is located on a floor other that the level of exit discharge.

and

IBC Table 1004.1.1 states that with standing room only the floor area in SF per occupant is 5 net or with tables and chairs the floor area in SF per occupant is 15 net.

Now if that is not confusing, now the Bar Owner has some thinking to do.

If anyone has anything to add, please do so!

It sounds like you answered your own question. Make sure you under the intent of fire area, especially if this is a mixed-use building.

I meant to say "understand the intent"
