I have a small tank footing ,12 * 12 with 4 pedestals ,I would assume it would be accepatble to design this as a combined footing, loads are symetrical in both directions ,all loads are equal .

What other design method could you use?

Don't forget lateral loads. These will destroy the symmetric shear and moment diagrams due to equal vertical loads.

I don't know much about statistics, but I do know that if something has a 50-50 chance of going wrong, 9 times out of 10 it will.

check first the reactions based from the design loads. Take note that lateral loads must be consider also. Consider also the soil bearing capacity. design it first as isolated footing, if there is an overlapping of footing thats the time that you can consider combined footing or other type of footing.
