Hi all,

My first post here - go easy on me.

I am trying to familiarize myself with ASME IX by working through the code and its interpretations.

One that is throwing me off is QW-200.4(b)- Interpretation: IX-10-34

Subject: QW-200.4(b)
Background: PQR A is welded with SMAW to join 5/8 in. (16 mm) thick plates with 5/8 in. (16 mm) of SMAW deposit. PQR B is welded with GTAW and SMAW to join 5/16 in. (8 mm) thick plates with 1/8 in. (3 mm) of GTAW and 3/16 in. (5 mm) of SMAW deposit. PQR C is welded with GTAW to join 3/16 in. (5 mm) thick plates with 3/16 in. (5 mm) of GTAW deposit.

Question (1): Do PQRs A and B qualify the combination WPS for a base metal thickness range of 1/16 in. (1.5 mm) to 11⁄4 in. (32 mm) when impact testing is not required?

Reply (1): No.

Can someone tell me why that wouldn't qualify that thickness range and what the actual thickness range would be?

Note that part 7 of that interpretation also says this:

Question (7): Do the provisions in QW-200.4(b) affect the responses to the above questions?
Reply (7): No.

When combining PQRs, the lower of the qualified thicknesses becomes the limit for the WPS.

Based on PQR B, the GTAW process is limited to 5/8" max. base metal thickness (2T), and 1/4" deposit thickness (2t). PQR A is welded on thicker material but does not use the GTAW process, so it doesn't help for T > 5/8".

The question in the interpretation is a bit daft in describing PQR C, which is not referenced in the ultimate question.

Thanks brimstoner - where in the code will I find evidence to support that (i.e. the thinner of the two coupons is the range qualified)?

Regarding PQR C, there are other parts to interpretation IX-10-34 (questions 2-6) that reference it.

Cheers

ST95,
It is dealt with in 200.4 (a)
(2) the base metal and deposited weld metal thickness
limits of QW-451 for each process, filler metal, or set of
variables are applied.
The base metal thickness limits using GTAW (PQR B)are 2 x T = 5/8"
Cheers,
Kiwi
