combination of riveted and welded connections

I have insufficient intermittent fillet welds, which cannot be reached for improvement. Is it possible to to combine the shear capacity of the existing welding with additional blind rivets for combined load transfer?

You probably need to move your post to the Structural engineering and other topics Forum.

I don't know what the code has to say on this but I've seen it done as in your case and also in the reverse, add welding to bolted joints. This was done a lot around here in upgrading existing structures for additional wind loading.

But,
Refer to AWS D1.1:2002, 2.6.7. "...rivets and bolts used in bearing connections shall not be considered as sharing the load in combination with welds in a common faying surface..."

HSB's for slip-critical conections may be used to share stress with welds per the UBC/IBC and the Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325/A490 Bolts.

Can you add plug welds from the same side that the rivet would be applied from?
