Column splice location

W14 column for a 3 story structure. Total height = 54'.

What is the ideal location for a splice? I was think about 2' about the 2nd story.

Ideal location would be 0 moment point.
Apply the wind load and you will get this point around at the storey mid height.
You can break the node in the model and set it as hinge, but you have to design it as full moment splice or at least 50% of column section moment capacity for the splice.

They can get a 54' stick without splicing. I would show a splice 4' above t/steel of the second floor and label it as a contractors option. 4' number is per OSHA to use as tie-off.

Willis, thanks. Should I also have a detail for this optional splice on my documents or should that be upto the contractor per derails on 14-23 of 13th edition?

Three feet above the floor level is a common point for easy access for a welder if you need a moment connection.

I agree with Willis, put the splice 4' above the floor to allow the contractor to use the columns for tie-offs. I would include a splice detail. Personally, I wouldn't note the splices as "optional", but I would be open to the contractor requesting to provide long columns instead of the splice and alternate splice details if requested by the steel fabricator. It may be a cost wash between deleting splices and adding steel weight at the higher levels where it is not required.
