Collaborative modeling for a small design team

My department has 6 floating licences of Pro/E on a network. We share files, but all of our seats are independent, with no Pro/Intralink, Windchill, or anything. I have some programming experience and I want to set up a collaborative environment. My goal is to have a team of designers modeling a single assembly in a common design space all at the same time.

I am hoping that the J-link API has these capabilities.

Does anyone out there know how to do something like this?

Putting everything in a common directory is asking for problems. How would a user know if he or she is opening a file the another user already has opened...they may be duplicating work, and only the first user would have rights to save the file after a days worth of work.

I have researched this quite thoroughly, as our company is looking for the same solution, but more along the lines of revision control as the driving force (we have 6 floating licenses, too). To achieve reliable collaboration and revision control (they go hand in hand), you need a Pro/E specific PDM system. For regular Joes like you and I, Intralink is total overkill (and very expensive), so we are currently in the process of purchasing 6 floating licenses of truEvault - a Pro/E-specific PDM software that does what we need it to do, but doesn't cost $100K to implement.
