Lately I've been trying to dive deeper into cold-formed steel design and so I've been combing very closely through the AISI S100-12 Manual. I'm working on calculating the compressive strength of a steel stud.
Part 1: Am I correct in assuming that it is typical for load bearing steel studs with punchouts matching those in the "General Product Information" of the SSMA technical guide to be used in wall construction? And if so the Ag, gross area, provided in the SSMA shape properties does not include the punchouts?

Part 2: Calculating the effective area of the stud, Ae, per section C4 of the AISI 100. The code points to section B2.2a. Maybe it's just the way it's worded but I'm really confused on how to calculate "b" based in figure B2.2-1. I know dh is a maximum of 1.5" based on the SSMA, I know wb but not w. So how do I calculate c? If I can calculate b, that's for one side of the neutral axis. Am I supposed to double that and divide by w to get a percentange and then multiply that by the Ag provided by the SSMA shape properties? Finally how does that relate to section B2.1, which seems like some very convoluted calculations all by itself.

Maybe I'm getting too deep in the weeds here and I should be ignoring the punchouts?

Any guidance would be appreciated.
