Coeficient of Friction

Can anyone provide reputatble references as to the most appropriate coefficient of friction to be used for steel-steel contact for piping systems.

Algor'sipepak recommends 0.3. This figure has been often quted in Marks Handbook and Machinery's handbook. However be careful as it depends upon the surface. If the surface is lubricated with graphite it may be 0.1 but if corroded ot may be 0.5 or higher.

You should also look at your theory. Remember the professor who kept saying the friction factor "in the limit" will be ...In the limit refers to the point at which the object just begins to slide.
