I am looking for information concerning the ultrasonic (or otherwise) testing of CMU walls to check for rebar and if the cells have been grout or concrete filled other than using a masonry drill bit and a flash light. I have seen the handheld devices that will locate the rebar and measure concrete cover, but are these the same devices that check for filled cells of the cmu?
Thanks in advance.

Thank you UcfSE. As always, most helpful. Just what we are looking for.

I have also found that a Ferroscan will work--probably the same handheld device you are referring to.

Ground Pentrating Radar (GPR) will be best.

Ultrasonic testing will NOT locate rebar, but it can locate voids - by trained users using the "direct transission" method.

There was a Structural Engineer Mag article a while back on CMU walls with GPR that I will try and dig out for you.
