Hello all,

I am doing a relay settings study for 2 back up MV generators. In the relay manual for MiCom , they did mention the term Close-up falts.

Can someone tell me what is a close up fault (I have heard of close in/out faults)

Dear Mr. Ashdgee

Q. "...In the relay manual for ... , mention the term Close-up falts (fault)...".
A I am of the opinion that it is a translation "slip".
a) The terms [Far-from-generator short circuit] and [Near-to-generator short circuit] is used in IEC 60909
b) Refer to IEC 60909 for their definition and application in short circuit current calculation.

'Close-up' refers to fault close to the generator terminals.

Dear Mr. RRaghunath
Please advise which Standard viz. IEC, ANSI or publication etc., states " 'Close-up' refers to fault close to the generator terminals."

That would be in the MiCom relay manual. (Under the scope of "etc.")

I'd agree it's probably a translation thing; in my neck of the woods, "close-up" is a photography term, and a "close-up fault" would be something like the way a picture turns out where the distance between the camera and my face is so short that not only does distortion occur but individual nose-hairs can be counted... [blush]

'Close-in' is the term we use for faults close to the supply protective device, most typically a circuit breaker of some sort.
