Cliff Failure beside Golf Course.....Area marked as GUR!!!!!!

Seems like there is nothing to keep this from happening anywhere along the ridge. Hard to tell from the soil pile, but it looks like a lot of granular material (i.e. it does not look like a solid mass of rock fell). Surprised it has not happened sooner in more locations. Now that's a hole that would give me no trouble sinking a putt!!
Looks like fairly new sedimentary rock.
What's more fascinating to me is, where is the mate to that cliff? Did it all just get washed away; did the cliff rise out of the ocean and its mate is under the sand on that beach?

It looks relatively stable. If this was frequent there would be a slope into the water, so it's apparently rare.
From it's the sunbathers that are the main cause of concern.
Rather than freeze-thaw it is blamed on weather that has been generally too dry combined with infrequent heavy showers. It may be the sand trap did act to drain into the sandstone. Or it could be coincidence.

That whole length of coastline is notoriously unstable and people die in rockfalls all to regularly. A young lady from my area died whilst walking along the beach around there when a section of cliff collapsed on to her.
I am amazed the the golf club did not fence the whole area off immediately as EireChch has suggested. I would imagine the HSE would have a field day if anyone got hurt or killed - but can you keep a golfer away from his balls!

I would be more concerned about beach goers than the golfers.
I think a golfer would survive the fall. You can see that the top couple feet of material at the top of the cliff is a darker color. It looks like this darker material tumbled off to the left and right sides of the pile.

The cause might be from the erosion of the drainage down the fairway toward the green and the drainage from the low spot in front of the green toward the water.
A free drop or a stroke and distance penalty. I would hit a fade to keep the roll to the right and away from the hazard.
