Do you provide a list of your past and current clients on your website?

If so, do you ask their permission to put it up?

Is this a good idea?

Yes, your competitors will think it is an excellent idea.

Ok maybe not a client list, but would you put some past projects that you have done. Maybe the bigger higher profile ones?

If the client would give you a good reference, yes. It's all about your reputation. It also shows your specialties.

I list most of the projects I have worked on the past 10 years, along with a description of services provided, location, and the name of the client. Never had a problem. Nothing proprietary is given.

Occasionally if there is some confidentiality, I simply list it as "Confidential Client", but that is the exception, not the rule.

What's your clients' understanding of your marketing procedures? I used to work for a large company that forbade any contractors/consultants to use our name in marketing. Our feeling was the project may have been done years ago, with different project personnel, and we did not want to be in the position of endorsing a firm where circumstances had changed.
Now, at my current job, our site describes projects, but leaves off client names. We also try to update the projects, not leave them up forever.

If your competitors want a list of potential new clients all they have to do is look up the yellow pages.

I mention representative projects I have worked on and describe the general scope of the projects, but never associate any particular project with a specific client. I do furnish a very selective client list though if requested.

Remember, it is only reasonable for a potential client to ask for references. HAVE THIS LIST PREPARED IN ADVANCE, CLEARED WITH THE CLIENTS ON THE LIST, AND NEVER HESITATE TO PROVIDE IT PROMPTLY UPON REQUEST. You could even develop multiple lists of client reverences, each list targeted to a construction type specialty.

No.

Most of my clients are engineering firms and utility engineering departments. They don't want their clients or management knowing that they need to go outside for expertise.

Rather than company names, I'd put "Mining industry company" or "Medical equipment supplier" instead, along with good project descriptions.
Good idea that of keeping a list of past clients/projects for reference.
