Clarification of Timing Belt Systems

Hello, I am fairly new to the concept, but my company is developing a test in which we want a motor to drive a shaft using a timing belt system.

I am looking for a basic understanding of how these "synchronous" systems work.

Example: I have one pulley with an outer diameter of 9.997 inches (84 grooves), and another pulley with an outer diameter of 2.357 inches (20 grooves). If the pitch of the tooth profile in each pulley is the same...say pitch 0.375", can these two pulleys be used successfully with the same belt with a 0.375" pitch?

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, and the speed and torque ratio would be 20/84 for higher torque at lower speed and 84/20 for higher speed at lower torque. Gates has a design guide in their website.

Besides pitch, the tooth profile and width of sprockets must match the belt. And of course the belt parameters must meet or exceed the dynamic requirements (load, speed, durability, etc.).
Functionally, the pitch diameters of the sprockets is most important (number of teeth times pitch divided by pi).
Each belt has a recommended minimum pitch diameter sprocket usage.
Probably other design criteria I'm omitting.
