Chicago Building Code and AISC

Is it really required to use AISC ASD 9th or AISC LRFD 1st edition for design in Chicago? I am doing a composite steel podium floor on an 7 story light gage steel structure. Can I not use the "latest and greatest" when it comes to design standards?

Sorry, don't know the answer, but that would be ironic (possibly moronic) given that AISC is HQ'ed in downtown Chicago.

Ingenuity, I thought the same thing but everything I find regarding the Chicago Building code says to use the AISC ASD 9th or AISC LRFD 1st editions...

Maybe give AISC a call and see what their take on this is?

No - AISC has no authority. You'd call the city of Chicago building department. They are the ones that adopt and legally enforce their own codes.
AISC would have no say in it.

However, the issue with using the older AISC specification is that there might be new provisions that cover older provisions that were unconservative.
In those cases you can always be more conservative than the adopted provisions...you just can't legally go below them.

The Chicago Building Code is strange--the last time I worked on a project in Chicago (about 5 years ago), I could not use ASCE 7 to calculate wind loads. I had to use ANSI 1982.

But JAE is correct--if you exceed code requirements, there should not be a problem.

Bookmark 13-148-010 Structural steel construction – Standards.
(a) Except as provided in paragraphs (b) and (c), the design, fabrication and erection of structural steel shall be in accordance with the requirements of the following document: Structural Steel Buildings – Allowable Stress Design and Plastic Design, AISC, 1989 Edition or Load and Resistance Factor Design Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, AISC, 1986 Edition.
