I seem to remember, from a previous job, that there is an ASME document defining good checking procedures. I can't find any references to them online though. Am I nuts? Or am I looking in the wrong hidey hole?

I don't think there's an ASME std relating directly to it. However, you could look over in GD&T forum at some of the checking posts over there, for instance:

Drafting zone used to have a piece about checking and what should be checked etc - I thought there was a link to it in one post or another. I think the Genium manual which is linked to drafting zone also has some stuff.
