Charted status for environmental engineers

Hi!

I graduated in BSc (Hons) Environmental Engineering and I am aiming to achieve the charted status.

Since i am not a Civil Engineer I cannot apply for MICE.Or can I?

Can anyone recommend charted status for environmental engineers?

Do you think that the fact that I have a BSc and not a BEng could make it harder to achieve a charted status?

Things may have changed, but in the past, in most states of the U.S., one way of becoming a registered (licensed, charted) engineer was to pass the required exams, have the requisite experiance and the recommendation of three engineers. It was not a necessary requirement to have a degree in engineering. In other words, if you had the practical experiance, could prove it by examination and had the recommendation of other engineers, you could become registered. In knew a few men who recieved their license this way and they were some of the best, most practical engineers I've ever met.

The Institution of Water and Environmental Management (IWEM) has now been accredited by the Engineering Council to award Chartered status to applicants passing its entrance criteria. This sounds as though it is the best route for you, based on what you have said.

If you wish to apply to the ICE you will need to produce a 2000 word career appraisal report and demonstrate that you have met all of the core objectives within their training scheme. If this is accepted then you can go forward to sit the Chartered Professional Review at the ICE. The details are laid out on the web site

As you mention Chartered Engineer and BSc rather than Professional Engineer and BS I am assuming that you are a UK graduate (or equivalent) rather than US. Being Canadian I mix the two, and am both C.Eng and P.Eng in Environmental which I entered (many years ago before there were Env.Eng degrees) via Metallurgy, as metal extraction has a long history of ecodamage which I hoped to clean up. The Institute of water and Environmental Management sounds a good way to go: another might be the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (a recent amalgamation of Inst. Materials and Inst Mining & Metallugy, looking at water as a material, much might depend on who you were cleaning up after. Its an excellent vocation and I definately believe that its practioners should be registered.
