Hello,
I am currently adapting an already existing Abaqus Model of an Additive Manufacturing process that includes a moving heat source along a substrate. The current model (190 different load steps) uses the temperature dependent properties of Ti-64 and runs completely within a day. When I change the material properties to another material of interest (IN718), the simulation runs much slower sometimes taking days to get only to step 20. I am assuming that the reason for this is due to the initial time step (about 1e-7) that I specify for each load step or possibly because of the DELTMX that I specify (DELTMX=200). Each step in the new simulation takes about 2000 increments to complete, but the Ti-64 model only takes about 20-40 for each step. I am expecting high thermal gradients and high cooling rates, but I need the simulation to be able to run quickly a I have a lot of simulations to run. What should I try to do to reduce my run-time?

Thanks.

I am not familiar with this type of analysis. Nevertheless, I am curious to know why you are using such a small initial time step? Also, if there is nothing you can do, get yourself some cluster time!

The initial time step is so small because each time step is very small, sometimes only fractions of a second. The entire simulation only covers a couple of seconds of transient behavior, so each time step is very small. Unfortunately, I do not have access to a cluster at this time, so I'm trying to do everything I can do to minimize the time on my workstation. Thanks.
