I dont know whether is it appropriate to post this question in this group, excuse me. I am working as Mechanical Design Engineer basically dealing with machines. I was wondering whether is there any kind of certifications/exams that one can take in the field of Product design or machine design or even broadly design, something like a DFSS (Design for Six Sigma), PE, FE...... If so, please let know the sources (links). Thanks,
Raj.

Hi rxpartha,
Fifteen years back, I faced the same situation. I particularly despaired after taking the PE mech. eng. review course which focused on HVAC, gas dynamics, heat transfer, eng. econ, etc.(good stuff for steam plant design). I flipped for the exam fee, took the mech. eng. grand division test, and found that the test authors had graciously put enough statics, kinematics, dynamics, gearing, light structures, etc. other machine design related stuff in the test to let me in the club. Your present day experience may vary.
Be aware that most licensing PE authorities now require, in addition, a BS degree from a recognized institution and written testimonies vouching for your experience and practice in the field.

Where are you located?

In the US, PE registration would be one option. Look up your state board of professional engineers for rules and regulations.

Thanks a lot for all your replies. I am very much aware about the PE exam. Actually the thing is that PE is kind of certification again going much into technical stuffs (now that I have completed my Masters in Mechanical Engineering, I feel this is fine). So my concentration is now into specifically into design field, making the design and its process more effective and there by develop the product efficiently/cost-effective/failure effective using various techniques like FMEA, QFD, DFSS which are rather not technical tools but used to improve the process and product to a great extent. So this is what my question was. So if you happen to know about any exams or certifications in these fields that would be very useful to me. Now that almost products are well established I feel we should concentrate on making the process and products much better and cost-effective. You can consider these kinds of exams as a Technical/Process, Product Improvements combination. Once again thanks much for all your views and replies.
With Best,
Raj
