Centrifugal compressors in series

I want to know about disadvantages of centrifugal compressors in serie arrangement.

Any compressor in series has an issue with runtime. If 1 unit in the series goes down they all go down unless you have substantial parallel units. A good thing is centrifugal compressors run a long time without maintenance.

There is no advantage of any compressor in series unless they are tied together with a single driver like a multi case cent unit or a multi throw recip

It's mainly one of starting and stopping and the issue of hunting and surge if one compressor goes out of sync with the others. You also tend to need intercoolers between each one to avoid excessive heat and high temperature. What sort of pressure rise / service are you looking at? If you give a bit more of a back ground to your query, you will get more responses.
