Cell reference style "stuck" on relative

I fired up excel and found that all of my spreadsheets are showing numbers in the column labels (as opposed to letters) and formulas are now showing in R1C1 style. I couldn't find the setting to change this back, and help was now help. HELP! Anybody know what happened and how to fix it?

Take a deep breath and try Tools->Options->General->R1C1 reference style
