I have a question regarding Table 1604A.3 on page 56 in the 2007 CBC. Under D+L there is a footnote ‘d’ and ‘g’. For footnote ‘g’ is says ‘For steel structural members, the dead load shall be taken as zero’. What does this mean? Does this mean that the deflection limit for D+L is only for Live Load? For example, under Roof members supporting nonplaster ceiling D+L is L/180. For Live load L/240. What exactly is the ‘g’ footnote implying and why do we not include the dead load in our deflection calcs?
