Hello All

The casting which came out of foundry had defect. There is a defect repair procedure in place.

The question is if the casting came out with 5 major defects (in the same casting)(Material A 216 WCB 16" 300# rating), can we permit repair to be conducted.

What is the population and distribution of defects beyond which repair cannot be tolerated.

Are there any standard (ISO, BS EN, ASTM, ASME Publication, API, AWWA etc) which addresses such problem?

Regards

Most of the ASTM material specification permit weld repair to a casting to repair casting defects. There is no standard or specification that states how many repairs or the severity of defects tha can be repaired. This is usually left to the casting buyer as to what limit he will accept from the foundry. Must keep in mind the amount of repairs made in a casting does not affect the castings qualirty if the repairs were performed correctly by qualified people. One rule of common sence to follow is at some point the cost of repair will exceed the cost of making a new casting. Before making a new casting however it is good practice to investigate why the the defects occurred and make the necessary corrections in equipment or process to eliminate the reoccurrance of the defects in the new casting.

The reparation procedure is a normal part of the production process of a casting.
Then it's nothing strange that a casting have been reparired that it's quite normal.

The point it's not the condition of the casting before the reparatiuon but what is the quality after the reparation.
A casting repaired in right way is more safe than a casting not repaired.
