Carpark collapse - Sydney

It looks fairly localized in the photos - like a corner column failed on a small roof - but the article seems to imply issues with tilt walls, etc. and refers to a "beam" that failed.

The "beam" shows hanging down in the second photo with an obvious bolted end connection and no bolts that I can see still there. Wish I could enlarge the image.

This is an obvious overloading, from McDonalds and KFC, due to their grease recepticles not being emptied in a timely manner.

I guess the expression is, "It went down under!"

I never park in these things if there is any other option.

seems to be more collapses these days

Maybe it's just that the world is smaller, newswise. The quality of the reporting certainly hasn't improved.

I don't think this one would be due to corrosive de-icing chemicals!

You are right about that, ajk1, but don't rule out corrosion. Not very far from the sea, and there may be other corrosive substances involved.

yeah, steelwork is bad for that. I remember peeling back some cladding at a shopping centre a few years back and the web had almost corroded through. I don't know whether this beam was located in a concealed ceiling of a shopping centre but it gets hot and humid in there. And if the cladding isn't 100% watertight that can accelate the corrosion locally as well.
