MEXICO CITY, July 14 (Reuters) - A Mexican court has sentenced a man to 208 years in prison for the criminal homicides of 26 people, most of them children, who died when a school collapsed during a powerful earthquake that struck Mexico City in 2017, authorities said on Wednesday.

The Mexico City attorney general's office said it had shown that the man described as a works director had guaranteed the structural safety of the school in Tlalpan, a southern district of the capital, without carrying out the required testing and despite irregularities in the building's construction.

did his boss tell him to do it?

I have no problem with this, just like I have no problem with prisons and the death penalty. In theory. Engineers should be held accountable just like everyone else.
In practice, conviction and sentencing (especially after natural disasters) are sporadic, and justice is rarely even-handed in countries that don't have strong democracies and free press.
Is really just one man responsible for all these fatalities? Maybe he did not pay off the right people.
But to agree with dik, yes, be careful what you rubber stamp.

Shocking, Mexico holds an bureaucrat to higher standards than the US. Maybe if we took a lesson from this and didn't give local engineering regulators a free pass then we would have fewer engineering disasters stateside.

His boss can likely pay off the right people... still no justice. He likely won't last 208 years, specially in a Mexican prison.
