I am in a position of continuing with structural consulting on custom homes or moving into the power distribution world. I would be designing sub-stations and maybe transmission lines.

The field interests me and it would be exciting to learn something new and it seems like it has long term stability. Although we all thought that about construction 4 years ago, too. I would have to give up working for myself, learn about working in a large company, and move my family.

My concern is that not working on buildings would hurt my ability to ever move back into that field.

I would really appreciate any insights people might have on their experiences and how their choices worked out for them.

Thanks,

I have always thought and practiced "multiple" disciplines - just in case one does a nose dive - like residential!!

It might be a little hard getting back in but you have no problem pointing out how your skill have changed to help your new company of job.

And you could always do "residential" on the side - just to keep your hand in...

Thanks guys,
I think keeping a little residential on the side is exactly what I'll do.

Go. Unless the move is someplace horrible, or the job is not reasonably secure.
