Hello all,

We intend to clad titanium B-338 Gr 12 on both sides of CS tubesheets A-105.
Does someone have experience with such an operation? can I get details etc.

regards,
roker

I have never clad both sides of a tube sheet. Cladding is usually done to control corrision on the tube side. Inorder to completely seal the tube/tube sheet joint, it is usually rolled and then seal welded. If you clad the back side, you will still have a crevice that may or may not be sealed and would be a potential for a leak source to attach the base metal.

Are you looking at a welded build up and then machine the tube sheel face?

TXiceman,

we intend to clad the shell side of the tube sheet against corrosion, the tube side of the tube sheet is Ti cladded since we want to make a seal weld but since the tubes are Titanium it can not be welded to the carbon steel tube sheet so we clad with Ti only for welding.

The cladding process doesn't care which side of the tubesheet is being clad or if even both are assuming you have no physical limitations to having access to the surfaces to be clad (skirts, channels, etc).

Now a question; are you planning to roll full length to prevent the crevice corrosion mentioned in a post above? And if so, since you can't (shouldn't) actually roll all the way out to (and especially past the end) of the tubesheet are you planning to clad thick enough to have a rolling margin at the shellside of the tubesheet?

roker...

This is getting a little goofy and probably too expensive...

A tubesheet clad and welded on both faces generates thermal discontinuity stresses also

Have you considered a plate-frame HX with TI plates and either an all- welded design or one with viton gaskets ?

These are somewhat expensive, but are a proven design that can stand up to most services ..
