Can you connect 2 GPS antennas to a GPS receiver?

Is this possible, for example have one antenna at the front of a car and one at the rear.
I know this sounds sort of daft because where would GPS chip work out its position.
I've heard that some of the high end luxury cars do it this way for increasing reliability of the in car satnav, but do they use two GPS receivers or do they multiplex/alternate the antenna used.
