I have a customer that wants to injection mold a base then blow mold a sphere from it.

Can this be done in Polycarbonate?

I have extensive experience with injection molding of engineering grade resins but know nothing about blow molding.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like he wants injection-blow molding. Yes- PC is suitable. Contact resin manufacturer for sable grades.

So this part can be produced injection-blow molded in one operation?

Hi,

The majority of babies' milk bottles are blow moulded....

And 20 litre cooler water bottles.

It can be injection blow or extrusion blow moulded.

As suggested, contact material suppliers. Also contact machinery suppliers.

The critical parameter is the melt flow rate. The material for blow molding should have higher value than the injection molding grade.

Actually its a lower melt flow rate or higher viscosity.

You need the parison to have enough strength when melted to support it's own weight while being stretched by the blowing process.

Sorry that I made mistake. Pat is right!
Blow molding grade should have lower melt flow rate.
