CAN messaging to track fuel consumed in Heavy Truck

A question on how to calculate fuel economy on a heavy duty diesel engine via the instantenous fuel economy signal available on the CAN.

Instead of running the very lenghty SAEJ1321 test protocol, I want to obtain some directional values of a test device on/off.

Any thoughts as to how to calculate my fuel consumed?
