Calculation of raw material and product mesh sizes for crusher in chemical process plant

Hi,

I have come across a problem in a textbook that I need some assistance with.

The problem is reproduced below, and asks you to determine the power input for a crusher in a chemical process plant.

The part I don't understand is 'Step 3' of the calculation procedure: Compute the raw-material and product mesh sizes (see above picture in yellow highlight).

They use the relationship: dr and dp = s/12 for calculating the mesh sizes, but where does the '12' come from? 

From my research, it seems to be the number of openings in the mesh? Refer link: [link ][/url]

"s = mesh opening measure used". s is in inches, abbreviated as "in."

It's just a conversion from inches to feet. 1 foot = 12 inches.
