calculating welder cost and productivity

I'm curious to know what techniques have been used to calculate welding cost incurred by a company. I use weld inches currently. I s there a better more accurate technique out there?

All the costing I have seen has used some sort of size/length measurement. Costs varied based on materials being joined, consummable materials required to do the weld, and QC/Testing/Documentation.
