Cables out of a light tight box 1

Hi there,

I am working on a project involving a box where the light can not get in.

It is very similar to a shoe box (1,5 mm thickness, a body and the lid). There are some cables going out.

My first idea was making a batch panel in one of the lateral walls, but due the amount of cables is too big (around 20) the available space could be not enough. Also i'm afraid of the wall, for the deformation and stress

Other idea could be cutting on the top of one of the body wall, let the cables (1 mm diameter) and sealing with a caulking gun. But in this case if we want to change a cable it would be very tricky.

I would like to know if anyone has any experience with this kind of systems. Any idea to let the cables out keeping the darkness inside the box.

Baffle walls so the cable needs to take a serpentine route. Witn non-reflective surfaces.

A cheap and dirty solution might be:

Extend the rim of the lid, so it comes most of the way down the side of the box

Make the lid slightly oversize

Glue a wide strip of velvet around the sides of the box and another around the inner faces of the lid edges, to make the lid a snug fit again

Use dark-coloured cables

Drape the cables over the edge of the box, fanned out so they form a layer one cable thick, with no crossings and 5mm or so between each cable. If you can induce a little waviness in the lay of the cable as it passes over the velvet, so much the better.

Put the lid on, trapping the cables between two layers of velvet.

dumb question ... electrical or mechanical cables.

why/how is the box loaded ? pressure ??

grommets are easy to install, arouns each cable.

feed them all through a large bung ? maybe a couple if you've got power and data cables.

a shoebox 1.5mm thk (0.06") would take a fair bit ... flat faces, bent angles, spot weld corners together ...

Thank you for the answers.

The link mcgyvr gave is very interesting; if this makes it for sealing I guess it will also do for light tightness. I already contacted the company.

The cables are for power suply (high voltage); transmission of data and light fiber.

The box is made of Mumetal (magnetic shielding).

These sealing systems from Roxtec and the grommets are very nice; but we already have the connectors in the cables.

I think the best would be the batch panel for the electrical and data cables; and this sealing-grommets for the light fiber

You can get grommets and the like which have a slit in the side allowing them to be wrapped around cables that already have terminations each end.

The Roxtec pieces are half circles already.. See page 2 of the pdf I posted.. Install them with or without the connectors already on the wire.
