I have been working with a design for a vertical moving stage to focus a microscope target. It uses a stepper motor connected to a cable chain and sprocket driving a lead screw and a nut connected to the stage. Chain and sprockets have a 2:1 ratio and the lead screw has a 1mm pitch. Anyway, in the end I get about 3 microns per motor step.

The problem is that when I remove the current from the motor, the sprockets move. It also does this when I turn the sprockets by hand. I think it is compliance in the plastic coated cable chain (W.M. Berg). I need to get rid of this "lash". Any thoughts?
