I have a condition where two HSS 10x6 members are being connected in a corner. Beam 1 is supporting Beam 2 and its going to be Butt welded and flush on 3 sides. I have a service load of 40 kips from Beam 2 acting at the connection. I am trying to figure out if my connection works. I know for a full pen weld, the strength of the weld metal is higher than the members being connected so we check the base metal capacity and if it is greater than the applied load we are ok.
SO my question here is, do I consider the welds here as full pen welds and check to see if that works or is there a way to calculate the capacity of my connection.
Please help a young engineer out!

Thank you,
Day

Consider a partial penetration butt weld, or groove weld. These are sized by the effective throat, indicated by parenthesis around the weld size in the weld symbol. If it sizes out, your good to go. If you use full pen welds, check backing requirements.

Thanks BUGGAR. Much appreciated.

See Section K1 in the AISC spec also.
