What is everyone's opinion on abandoned buried weld end valves? Meaning that it is still tied to the pipeline, but taken off the maintenance schedule. My company typically abandons valves in place, where the situation makes it not feasible to remove it from the pipeline, such as being branched off another pipeline that can't be taken down. Therefore, the field crews would leave the valve in the open position and remove the high head extension including the frame and cover. This would be followed by applying external coating to the valve.
